San Diego International Airport Opens New Terminal 1 with PMWEB as a Strategic Partner

San Diego, CA — October 1st, 2025 — Travelers passing through San Diego International Airport (SAN) are stepping into a new era of comfort, efficiency, and sustainability with the opening of the first phase of the airport’s new Terminal 1.

The new facility introduces 19 modern gates, a spacious ticketing hall with 69 check-in kiosks and 66 counters, a 13-lane security checkpoint, and seven baggage carousels capable of handling 4,000 bags per hour. Guests can enjoy 90,000 square feet of concessions, including local and national dining brands, as well as a 5,200-space parking plaza and new roadway access designed to ease congestion.

The terminal also reflects San Diego’s commitment to sustainability and design excellence, featuring the striking “Luminous Wave” glass façade by artist James Carpenter and operating on 100% carbon-free electricity.

Beyond enhancing travel experience, the $3.8 billion New T1 program is a major economic driver for the region. The project is expected to contribute more than $4.5 billion to San Diego’s economy, create over 25,000 local jobs with $2 billion in wages, and generate $127 million in tax revenues to support public services and infrastructure.

PMWEB as the Digital Backbone

To deliver such a complex program, SDCRAA turned to PMWEB as the centralized project controls system for planning, cost management, contracts, and execution. PMWEB’s visual workflows and integrations enabled the Authority to achieve:

  • Faster approvals: More than a 50% reduction in progress invoice cycle times.
  • Uninterrupted continuity: Migration of 35 active and historical projects into PMWEB with zero downtime.
  • Full program visibility: Real-time dashboards and portfolio oversight across all divisions.
  • Financial alignment: Seamless synchronization between project controls and accounting systems.

A New Era for San Diego Travel

The opening of Terminal 1’s first phase is only the beginning. Construction on additional gates and facilities will continue into 2026 and 2028, ultimately bringing the terminal to 30 gates and completing the replacement of the 58-year-old original Terminal 1.

“San Diego International Airport is setting a new standard for modern, sustainable air travel,” said Chris Wagner, VP of Industry Strategy at PMWEB. “We are honored to be a part of this project, supporting the Airport Authority as they deliver a world-class travel experience for San Diego’s citizens and visitors.”
