Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

SUMMARY

Atlanta International Airport implemented PMWeb for a 20-year, $6 billion program of capital works from 2016 to 2036. The entire PMWeb system was implemented and in use in under two months, with the configuration; workflows; real-time interactive dashboards; and roll-out of the system concurrent with system training and support.

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Since 1998, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (commonly referred to as “Atlanta Airport”), has been the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic. Over 100,000,000 passengers go through Atlanta Airport annually, generating a $27 billion economic impact for metro Atlanta and providing over 63,000 jobs onsite. In March 2016, airport officials announced a 20-year, $6 billion master development plan called ATLNext. Airport improvements include the construction of Concourse G, a sixth runway, a 400 room hotel, and additional cargo structures, and new parking garages. Additionally, a new canopy will be added to the exterior of the Domestic Terminal along with terminal renovations and the expansion of Terminal T.

CHALLENGE

Construction was set to begin in June 2016, only three months after the project was announced, and rapidly expanding in 2017 with nearly $1 billion of work expected to be underway, including parking deck construction, five new gates on Concourse T, terminal modernization, and preparations for the new 10-gate Concourse G. The ATLNext Management Team needed to move quickly to find a Project Management Information System (PMIS) that could manage everything from planning, estimating, engineering forms, document controls, and scheduling in an all-in-one solution that could be quickly implemented. Additionally, the business processes for all those areas needed to be managed efficiently through a visual workflow interface. Finally, interactive custom dashboards and business intelligence reports were required.

SOLUTION

After reviewing several enterprise-level capital project management systems, Atlanta Airport determined that PMWeb was the only solution that met its broad system needs for such a large scale and long-term development project.  One of the most important determining factors was PMWeb’s Visual Workflow Module. Considering the 20-year master plan, people will come and go but the system and its processes need to remain pre-programmed, automated, and with a consistent methodology. Also influential in the decision were PMWeb’s robust financial tools that provide a projective financial view of the project. Accounting systems tell you where you have been. With PMWeb, forecasting what was coming was now possible.

RESULTS AND BENEFIT

Working jointly under a tight timeline, the PMWeb team of consultants worked with the Atlanta Airport project management team to configure the system and workflows, create customized real-time interactive dashboards, and roll-out the system concurrent with system training and support. The entire system was implemented and in use in under two months. Almost immediately, the ATLNext teams realized they had made the right decision going with PMWeb as business processes flowed smoothly with no bottlenecks caused by paper-based approval processes. More importantly, there was complete transparency with a single source of truth throughout the entire project with PMWeb’s all-in-one web-based system. Today, PMWeb is critically important for the Atlanta Airport project control teams to keep the long-term development plan on schedule and on budget.

“The implementation of PMWeb was incredibly smooth. Because it is ready out-of-the-box, we were using it across our organization in under two months.”
