Transport for New South Wales (Transport for NSW)
SUMMARY
Transport for NSW’s function is to build transport infrastructure and manage transport services in New South Wales – including rail, buses, ferries, roads, and bridges – across an area of 801,150 square kilometers (497,811 square miles) and serving a population of more than 7.5 million. PMWeb is used to manage Programs, Projects, and Contracts for Transport for NSW’s Infrastructure and Place division.
OVERVIEW
PMWeb was implemented for a number of areas of Transport for NSW:
- Proof of Concept for the Road & Fleet Services operations of Transport for NSW’s Roads & Maritime (RMS)business, resulting in PMWeb being embedded in the organization’s forward IT strategy at the time
- Implementation of PMWeb as a Project Delivery System (PDS) for Transport for NSW’s Transport Projects Division (now Infrastructure and Place). This system went live to more than 500 users in February 2016. The PDS implementation was large and complex, as Transport for NSW needed to maintain Business as Usual across many hundreds of projects valued individually from under $1 million to more than $3 billion. The original PDS Scope is within the yellow border in the following image. The Transport for NSW PMWeb system was selected as having the capability, out of the box, to provide all of the identified PDS functionality. At the time of Go Live in February 2016, the implementation team had configured many of these functional areas to also align with Transport for NSW’s specific requirements. There was in fact a high level of bespoke configuration to meet Transport for NSW requirements and integration with Enterprise systems including Active Directory, SAP Financial/Payments system, and a partial integration with HP (MicroFocus) Desksite Document Management system. Subsequent integrations were implemented with TfNSW’s Master Data Management system and Data Warehouse.
SOLUTION
Following configuration, the system was placed in Pilot on major projects from November 2015 to January 2016. The system then went live on Monday, February 1st, 2016 to more than 500 users, following a comprehensive data migration the weekend prior that had been scripted for more than six months.
RESULTS AND BENEFITS
As of June 2020, Transport for NSW’s use of PMWeb had increased to approximately 1,500 projects valued at around $45 billion and more than 1,300 registered users of the system. Of these users, Transport for NSW classified 525 users as “active”.
Transport for NSW has operated PMWeb version 4.6.26 for more than five years. We are currently (April 2021) working with Transport for NSW to prepare for an upgrade to a newer version.
