Port of Los Angeles
SUMMARY
The PMWeb SaaS solution was implemented for the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), focusing on cost management to be utilized by the Construction and Engineering departments aside from their accounting cost management. Other features implemented involved a move from their Autodesk Buzzsaw system where subcontractors and POLA had been routing submittals, RFIs, and Daily Reports.
OVERVIEW
This was the implementation of PMWeb to manage construction activity at the Port of Los Angeles. The port district is an independent, self-supporting department of the government of the City of Los Angeles and occupies more than 3,000 hectares of land and water along 69 kilometres of waterfront. The port has 27 cargo terminals, 86 container cranes, 8 container terminals, and 182 kilometres of on-dock rail.
CHALLENGE
The construction projects range from a large number of improvement projects, to large complex construction works such as the now-completed $510 million project to lengthen its wharves to 1,400 linear metres, deepen the water at four berths, install semi-automated cranes, build an on-dock intermodal rail yard and make improvements to reduce truck turn times.
SOLUTION
The Harbor Department’s Construction Division was seeking a web-based construction project management system that would (among other features) facilitate communication, centralize project information and documents, produce detailed reports and dashboards of project data and issue statuses and customize workflows for processing documents between all parties involved during the life of a construction project.
The Construction Division also wanted a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) system that was hosted and maintained by the service provider.
RESULTS AND BENEFITS
Implementation of Capital Projects for all construction activity to increase the efficiency of projects. The objective was to create a cost management system that can be utilized by the Construction and Engineering departments aside from their accounting cost management, which is only accessible to certain staff positions, to gain more perspective and detail on cost management.
The implementation of PMWeb also involved a move from their Autodesk Buzzsaw system where subcontractors and POLA had been routing submittals, RFIs and Daily Reports.
A minor integration was completed with their CPS (Contracts Payments System). No data migration was required.
