San Diego International Airport

SUMMARY

San Diego International Airport is the busiest single-runway commercial service airport in the USA. PMWeb was implemented for project management of all capital works projects at the airport, including data migration from their previous system. Around 80 active projects are currently being managed using PMWeb,

OVERVIEW

Founded in 1928, San Diego International Airport is the busiest single-runway commercial service airport in the USA. The runway is 2,865 meters in length and 61 meters in width. The airport features 51 gates in Terminals 1 and 2; and 4 Gates at the Commuter Terminal, with a new Terminal 1 slated for 2022. In 2018, the airport served 24 million passengers, a record-high total and a nearly 10 percent increase over the previous year. The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA) was created in January 2003, as an independent agency to manage the day-to-day operations of the Airport and address the region’s long-term air transportation needs.

CHALLENGE

SDCRAA was looking for an e-Construction Project Management Solution Software System to enable the Authority and its stakeholders to perform various functions related to the Construction Project Management process. They wanted the System provider to configure and implement the system as well as train designated staff to successfully launch the integrated e-Construction System. The existing system had many integrated systems with a business model that focused on a ‘contractor’ perspective. The Authority wanted one single software solution with an ‘owner’ perspective. The Authority also required a system that could migrate the existing Meridian Prolog data to a future solution.

SOLUTION

SDCRAA selected PMWeb as their e-Construction Project Management Software Solution. PMWeb was configured and implemented with training for SDCRAA staff. SDCRAA purchased several PMWeb modules and tools such as Cost Management, Project Management, and Custom Forms and implemented multiple divisions in SDCRAA. Data Migration from legacy Prolog Manager database and Integration with E1 was also an important function of SDCRAA’s software selection.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

The integrated implementation team successfully implemented PMWeb to their multiple department user bases. As part of the configuration, 35 legacy projects were migrated from Prolog Manager in conjunction with “Just in Time” project team training of both internal and external project participants to eliminate any downtime for a project or data access. This was accomplished in a phased rollout approach based on division. As a result of the integrated approach and dedicated utilization of automated workflow, the team was able to achieve reduced approval times for progress invoices by more than 50%. SDCRAA is currently managing over 80 active projects using PMWeb.
