UC Davis Health is a hub of innovation that encompasses UC Davis Medical Center, UC Davis School of Medicine, The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, and UC Davis Medical Group. UC Davis Medical Center ranked among the nation’s top hospitals for 2020 in 9 adult medical specialties, according to an annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals survey. The medical center has also been the #1 hospital in Sacramento for at least the last nine years, and in the Top 10 in the state for the past seven years. UC Davis Medical Center serves a 65,000-square-mile area that includes 33 counties and 6 million residents across Northern and Central California. The 627-bed acute-care teaching hospital maintains an annual budget of roughly $1.7 billion. UC Davis admits more than 40,000 patients per year and handles nearly 1 million visits.

CHALLENGE

UC Davis Health was using Prism software with many expensive and cumbersome customizations added over the years as the organization’s capital planning and project management requirements expanded. The resulting system was slow and difficult to use. Furthermore, it failed to encompass the entire plan, build and operate capital project life cycle into an integrated solution. This resulted in projects being run inefficiently from a time and cost perspective. Realizing they needed a better system, they began a comprehensive industry-wide search.

SOLUTION

After evaluating several systems, UCDH selected PMWeb as its Cap-Ex Planning and PMIS for the following reasons:

• PMWeb was clearly the easiest of the systems to use with its Outlook-style interface, drag and drop functionality, and ability to copy-paste directly from MS Excel.
• PMWeb’s intuitive Visual Workflow module allows for UCDH to easily build all their business processes into the system.
• Real-time dashboards and BI Reports allow for increased productivity, transparency, and accountability.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

PMWeb’s ready out-of-the-box system was quick to implement and UCDH experienced the immediate benefits of its Visual Workflow module with drastic improvements to its procurement processes. Additionally, its easy-to-use intuitive interface brought about vastly higher user-adaptability rates.

The UC Davis Medical Center is set to see a massive overhaul of its intensive care unit space under a new $2.9 billion expansion plan. The university is planning to build a new 16-story hospital tower that would replace the 120,000 square feet east wing of the hospital, as well as parts of the north and south wings of the hospital.

After the construction of the so-called “California Tower” with 400 beds is complete, the total capacity of the medical center would be 700 beds.

A five-story pavilion is also planned adjacent to the existing medical center and a new parking structure. The total size of the project is over 990,000 square feet.
